Functional Jaw Orthopedics
in Tamarac, FL and Surrounding Communities
If you are concerned with your child’s bite
Or misaligned teeth, you’ve found the perfect place! Dr. Flor is one of the very few Dentists in South Florida with experience on Functional Jaw Orthopedics, your child can start treatment as soon as 3 years old.
Malocclusion is when a child’s teeth become crooked or crowded. The child may also have a problem with his or her bite. That means the teeth of the upper jaw don’t meet normally with the teeth of the lower jaw when the jaw is closed.
First, an orthopedic appliance is inserted into the mouth to move bone. These functional appliances are removable devices which alter the growth of the jawbone to correct many problems such as airway obstruction, mouth breathing, over bites (class II), under bites (class III) and other bone formation pathology. In most cases, the purpose of the appliance is to expand the arch to allow the teeth to fit in, rather than the traditional orthodontist approach of extracting healthy teeth.
Orthopedics Q & A
Q & A
Malocclusion can sometimes be caused by an injury to the jaw. But it’s often the result of many different things. It may be from genes, the environment, or both. Malocclusion can develop as a child grows.
Children who suck their thumbs or fingers after age 5 have a greater chance of developing malocclusion. Children with a very small space between their baby teeth are at risk too. They may have problems with malocclusion when their permanent teeth come in. This is because the permanent teeth are larger and need more space.
A child with malocclusion has crowded or crooked teeth. He or she may also have 1 of these bite problems:
- Overbite. The front teeth in the upper jaw stick out over the teeth in the lower jaw.
- Underbite. The teeth in the lower jaw stick out over the teeth in the upper jaw.
- Open bite. The front teeth don’t meet when the jaw is closed.
- Crossbite. The top teeth sit behind the bottom teeth.
Malocclusion may cause a child to have:
- Problems eating or speaking
- Teeth grinding
- Loss of baby teeth too soon or very late
- Mouth breathing
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Jaw joint problems

Wonderful experience! Always a bit nervous when going to the dentist, but the whole experience made the visit as relaxing as can be. Very friendly staff, made it easy to make an appointment and add me to their system. Brizma, the dental hygienist, was excellent and went through my x-rays and exam with me, and explained the results clearly. She added recommendations to improve my gum health. All with a smile on her face, making the experience even more pleasant. The doctor was also friendly and informative. The office is clean, modern, and comfortable. Even having headphones and a TV on the ceiling so you can be distracted during the procedure. Highly recommend My Tamarac Dentist.![]()

What started out as a good experience with Dr. Flor Luzardo, turned very bad within a few days. I've been having work done on my teeth all my life. I'm approaching 60. I've worked in a dental office and have a friend of over 25 years who is a dentist in LA. Most importantly I know my own body and mouth. I went in the office to get a filling and a cleaning. I ended up getting 2 fillings. While actually sitting in the dental chair I was sent the link to do a Google review?? In the end & I'm sure not intentionally the tooth next to the one being worked on was broken. Dr. Luzardo insisted that I needed a root canal. I said I didn't want one & she should pull the tooth. She wouldn't do it. I had to go to the Doctor she referred me to, take a day off from work and pay $140 to the Doctor I was sent to nearly an hour away. Ultimately he came to the same conclusion, pull the tooth. He called Dr. Luzardo and explained he was sending me back to have the tooth pulled. I went back and said I wish you would have just done this in the first place. And I was glad the other Doctor was honest enough to tell me not to get the root canal. It would have been alot of money down the drain. Dr Luzardo got up and walked out like a spoiled child. The manager in trying to make things right for the broken tooth and sending me all over the place and lost time at work said he would try and give me a fair price. The manager walked in with a letter from Dr Luzardo saying that she is refusing to give me treatment!?!? It's now getting late in the day and I still need my broken painful tooth pulled. The manager rushed to find me someone and returned my initial $248 payment. Same day 3rd office. The doctor pulls the tooth and confirmed a root canal would NOT have worked. My advice to Dr Luzardo is listen to what you're patients have to say and don't run off like a child when you're wrong. We all have experiences we can learn from every day. If you notice they say that was over 4 years ago. the tooth is still missing due to Dr Luzardo doing a terrible job and the tooth is still missing!![]()
